Relative humidity (RH) is the variable most people ignore, and it makes a big difference. The target window is roughly 55–62% RH.
Too dry — below about 55% — and trichomes turn brittle and snap off when handled, taking potency and flavor with them. Too humid — above about 65% — and you create conditions where mold and bacteria thrive. The simplest fix is a two-way humidity pack tucked into your container; it both adds and absorbs moisture to hold a set level. Light
UV light breaks down cannabinoids surprisingly fast — meaningful degradation can begin within hours of direct exposure. This is the single easiest variable to control: store flower in the dark. Use an opaque or amber UV-resistant container, and keep that container inside a drawer or cabinet. Clear jars on a sunny counter look nice and cost you potency.
Air
Oxygen oxidizes cannabinoids and stales terpenes over time, while too much trapped moisture invites mold. You want an airtight seal with minimal headspace. Open the container only when you need to, and resist the urge to handle the buds repeatedly. Every time you open it, you swap fresh oxygen in.

- Keep buds whole. Only grind what you're about to use. Whole flower has less exposed surface area, so it oxidizes more slowly. Grinding ahead of time speeds up staling.
- Label with strain and date. It sounds fussy, but knowing what you have and how old it is helps you use older flower first and notice when something's been sitting too long.
- Store away from strong odors. Flower can pick up smells from its surroundings, which is another reason a true airtight seal matters.
