What Makes a Cannabinoid "Minor"?
It's purely about quantity, not importance. A typical flower harvest is dominated by THCA or CBDA, with everything else β CBG, CBC, THCV, CBN, and dozens more β usually present at well under 1% each. The plant makes them all from the same starting material through slightly different enzymatic routes.
Because they occur in such small amounts, most minor-cannabinoid products don't come straight from flower. Manufacturers either breed specialty cultivars that overproduce a specific compound, or isolate and concentrate it during extraction. That distinction matters when you're evaluating a product: a "CBG flower" bred to produce CBG is a different thing than a distillate formulated to a target percentage.
CBG: The Starting Point
Cannabigerol (CBG) is often called the "mother cannabinoid," because its acidic form, CBGA, is the chemical precursor the plant converts into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA. Most CBGA gets converted before harvest, which is why CBG usually shows up in trace amounts on a standard flower COA.
CBG is non-intoxicating, and breeders have developed high-CBG hemp cultivars specifically to make it available in meaningful quantities. On a lab report, a few tenths of a percent of CBG in regular flower is completely normal β it's simply leftover raw material the plant didn't convert.
CBN: What THC Becomes Over Time
Cannabinol (CBN) is unusual among cannabinoids: the plant barely produces it directly. Instead, CBN is primarily a degradation product β it's what THC turns into when it's exposed to oxygen, heat, and light over time. CBN is only weakly intoxicating compared to THC. It's marketed heavily in the sleep-product category, but the honest summary of the research is that it's thin β much of CBN's nighttime reputation rests on association and anecdote rather than strong clinical evidence. Treat bold claims on packaging accordingly.
THCV: The Different Kind of THC
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) is structurally similar to THC but with a shorter carbon side chain β a small change with real consequences for how the molecule interacts with the body's receptors. At low doses THCV appears to behave differently than THC; at higher doses it becomes more THC-like. Research is early, and dose makes a big difference in this compound's behavior.
THCV occurs naturally in certain cultivars β especially African landrace sativas β but almost always in small amounts. Most THCV products on the market today rely on concentrated or converted material rather than naturally THCV-rich flower.
THCP: The Potency Headline
Tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THCP), identified by Italian researchers in 2019, is the mirror image of THCV's story: its side chain is longer than THC's. In receptor-binding studies, THCP bound to CB1 receptors dramatically more strongly than THC β the source of headlines calling it "30x stronger."
Two cautions belong next to that headline. First, receptor binding in a lab is not the same as a measured effect in a person; strong binding suggests high potency but doesn't quantify real-world experience. Second, the plant produces THCP in vanishingly small amounts, so commercial THCP products are typically made through chemical conversion, and often blended with other cannabinoids. Do Minors Matter in Regular Flower?
In ordinary flower, minor cannabinoids appear in fractions of a percent β too little for any one of them to drive the experience on its own. Their more interesting role is contextual: the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes working together shape an experience differently than any single isolated compound.
